Social context study

Current influences/ Fears in society

·         Terrorism (7/7 bombings)
·         Tsunami (Boxing Day 2004 Tsunami)
·         Religion
·         Earthquake (Nepal 2015)
·         Riots (Upton Park Riots 2009)

Upton Park Riots 2009:

·         During a league cup second leg game at Upton Park, West Ham played Milwall where there were riots before, during and after the game. There were three pitch invasions, a 44 year old man was stabbed and a large number of injuries.
·         Riots continued five hours after the match and the game was postponed as 50/60 fans ran onto the pitch when West Ham took the equaliser in extra time.

·         People threw bricks, bottles and rubbish and large amounts of vandalism took place (ripping out bollards from the road) Small fires were also started.

·         There were 200 Riot Police and 20 mounted Policeman, as well as a Police Helicopter. 2,900 Milwall fans.

Plot Synopsis:

·         My film idea is to base the story on the Upton Park riots. There will be four characters with mixed ages, ranging from a young adolescent (15) to a middle aged man (40).

·         In the film the scenario of the 44 year old man getting stabbed will be included as it headlined the riot.

·         The film will be called ‘The Riot’ because it makes it out like the Upton Park Riot is one of the biggest riots/tragedies in English football.

·         In the film it is important to have characters that are vulnerable and innocent, as well as characters that get carried away. This way there is more conflict between social groups making it more engaging.

·         The genre will be hooliganism, action and violence.

Inspiration:

·         I have taken inspiration from two films which are similar to my film idea, which are Green Street and The Firm. Each of them are similar because two of the three films are about West Ham. They each have a story line regarding riots during a game which links well with my film idea.
