Deconstruction of actors in The Departed

Jack Nicholson plays the "Boss Man" in the film, as he is older (68), large, and is well known as being powerful in many of the films he stars in. He also has an overpowering voice that is very recognisable to most viewers.

Matt Damon plays a newly enforced FBI agent who is rivalled against Leonardo DiCaprio's character as he appears young (although he is 35),  famous, and known to play the keen youngster in films of the crime drama genre.

Leonardo DiCaprio plays a criminal, impersonating a new FBI agent. This role is effective for him as he is young (31) and usually plays characters with complicated situations.

Alec Baldwin plays the chief of the FBI, as he is slightly older (47), and known for being in positions of power and authority in films. Mark Wahlberg plays his second in command as he is middle aged (34), and can play the "joker" as he has featured in many comedies also.

Vera Farminga is the only girl starring a main role, she is stuck in a love triangle with Mark Wahlberg and Leonardo DiCaprio, which amplifies their rivalry within the film.

Ray Winstone plays Jack Nicholson's second in command, as he is commonly known for being tough and a criminal in films, with his rough accent and violent behaviour in films.

Martin Sheen plays the friendly captain of the FBI, This role suits him as the public know him for being very paternalistic within his roles and is usually "The donor" or "The helper"

From this we can get an idea that a crime drama could be effective if there is a large percentage of male actors within the trailer, with a vast array of different types of them, to give the audience a lot to think about. A problem will be that we only have a young cast, and so we will need to make them look as old as possible to make this work.
