Production company research
Black Mass
- The trailer for Black Mass has three different production companies shown in the trailer. These are Warner Brothers, Ratpac entertainment and cross creek productions.
- In the trailer these productions are shown right at the start and for all three only have six seconds of screen time on the trailer. This is because the trailer isn't holey for the promotion and publicity of the production companies its too present an eye catching, interesting trailer that will get people to go and watch the whole film.
- In terms of what we has a media group can gain from these and how their shown in Black Mass is that Warner Brothers is the biggest and most well known at of the three. Therefore, as we only have one spot in our trailer for a professional and real production company it would make sense for us to use the Warner Brothers one for its the best known.
The Departed
- Now compared to Black Mass, The Departed trailer only has one production shown in the trailer and is shown later on at the start than Black Mass's ones. Similarly, the main and only production company shown is Warner Brothers but it is shown in a different colour scheme that was used when it was first established.
- From this and what I've seen in Black Mass, Warner Brothers seems to be a famous, prominent and popular production company within this crime/corruption thriller films and the production companies opening running time is only a couple of seconds which makes it a great fit for our trailer.
Limitless
- Comparatively, Limitless has a completely different set of production companies compared to the first film trailers that I've talk about above. The production companies here are Relativity Media and ROGUE which is a Relativity Media company so both are linked closely to each other and show up very early on in the trailer through fast editing like Black Mass.
- These are two production companies that aren't as popular and well known as Warner Brothers and seem to be a bit more unorthodox with their futuristic looking openings which suits the films narrative and its most likely why they were chosen as a company due to their modern edge.
- Now in terms of choosing a professional and real company in our trailer, I don't think we would use any of these two and the merit that they aren't as well know as Warner Brothers and their futuristic and space age theme doesn't really fit into what are films narrative is about and might mislead the audience to the genre and plot that our film trailer follows.
The Wolf of Wall Street
- The Wolf of Wall Street follows suit with Black Mass and Limitless as the production companies that are shown come and go within a matter of seconds through fast paced editing which seems to be a theme running through majority of trailers is something we will have to include when editing our trailer.
- The production companies in this film and trailer are the well known Paramount who are a Viacom Company and Red Granite Pictures. Now Paramount is a well known and established production company who have been in some very successful and popular films. The other production company Red Granite isn't as well know and established as Paramount pictures and their opening isn't has exciting and interesting as Paramount's.
- In terms of for our trailer, from this trailer, I would definitely chose Paramount as it was as well known and established as Warner Brothers as a more interesting and opportunistic opening that we can play with to suit our trailer or just leave it how it was originally created. Moreover, The Wolf of Wall Street has a similar narrative, themes and genre as our films so choosing Paramount would seem a logical and smart choice due to is affiliation with this film.
Evaluation
- I have discovered that films within our genre of Crime Drama have a range of major and minor production companies.
- Due to this it means we have no restrictions when choosing our own major production company to use for the trailer.
- However, I personally think that Paramount Productions will be the best one to use because that is the production company of The Wolf of Wall Street and is more identifiable with Crime Drama than the others due to the status and popularity of the film.
