Deconstruction of props
Legend
- The first prop seen in the Legend trailer is a old fashioned revolver (gun).
- This prop conveys their is going to elements, themes and scenes of violence in the film.
- It also subtly reveals a little of the restrictive narrative because guns and violence are commonly conventions within the world of crime and gangsters.
- Thus implying the protagonists are going to be the cause or have involvement in gun violence.
- In terms of our film trailer, the prop of a gun will not be necessary as, even though they are in the same genre, our trailer does not fall down the route of gang violence and therefore no need for a gun.
- The next major prop in the trailer is shown through a close of a leather bag full of money being poured into a sink.
- Similar to the gun, the money links to the narrative and genre of the film as making cash money is a common convention scene in these films.
- Additionally, the close up shots of the money is a common convention as it symbolises to the audience how ostentatious these gangsters are and also to highlight just how we should feel shocked that criminal activities can earn individuals some much money when other people earn less legally.
- With is in mind, I think it is vital that we have a shot of money similar to the shot inLegend or one more symbolic and cinematic for a more deepen, meaningful effect.
- This prop of the hammer is another prop in the trailer that indicates there is going to be quit extreme violence conforming to gangster conventions seen in films.
- Thus implying the protagonists are going to be the cause or have involvement in gun violence.
- Although, in some ways, the hammer is symbolic because due to it being used in a fight scene, we can infer the protagonist is using it against one of their enemies.
- Symbolising how they crush their enemies and opponents with extreme violence with the hammer as a sign of strength.
- In terms of our film trailer, the prop of a gun will not be necessary as, even though they are in the same genre, our trailer does not fall down the route of gang violence and therefore no need for a hammer or any such weapons.
- Another prop used in the trailer is the Zippo lighter.
- It is shown through a long shot of the protagonist with it light in his hand.
- On face value it can just be seen as a tool to light cigarettes and cigars etc.
- However, another interpretation can see it a symbol for the protagonists journey of igniting their domination of gangster world.
- On the other hand it can be used to symbolise pain and death that come with domination of such as violent society they rule.
- Although the fire can convey progress and consumption, it also is symbolic for bring peoples attention to that fire, and in our trailer the 'fire' is something our protagonist wants to keep hidden.
The Wolf of Wall street
- In the The Wolf of Wall Street, the first prop in the trailer is a glass of orange juice presented to the audience through a low angle mid shot.
- This can be seen as just a normal part of the protagonists morning routine which gives the audience they are witnessing the protagonist on a personal level.
- Continuing, due to the known lifestyle of the protagonist taking drugs and drinking heavily, it can be symbol of him trying to regain and save his health, but still giving the audience personal access to his life.
- Therefore, I believe we have discuss inserting a prop like the orange juice into our trailer if we see it necessary to convey the implications to carries to the audience and also if it fits with the restrictive narrative of the film.
- As in Legend we see the prop of money being used as its a common convention in this genre.
- However, we see it being through a long shot of it being tapped around a woman and with it being piled up in huge stacks on the table and on the floor.
- Links to the narrative and genre of the film as making cash money is a common convention scene in these films.
- Additionally, this shot of the money is a common convention as it symbolises to the audience how ostentatious and affluent the protagonists are in this film through their financial crimes.
- Also it highlights quit obtusely to audience that mass amounts of money these people have made and on a deeper level, with it being strapped to a woman symbolise how money is the ultimate resource of power in the world we live in today.
- Again, I think it is vital that we have a shot of money similar to the shot in both films but one more symbolic and cinematic for a more deepen, meaningful effect.
- In this ,again, we see the importance of money being used as its a common convention in this genre.
- This time it is through the prop of a target that is labelled with different sums of money depending on where the characters land the dwarf dart.
- Links to the narrative and genre of the film as making money is a common convention scene in these films and this is a representation of how ugly the greed for money can become.
- It highlights quit obtusely to audience how obsessed and controlled the characters and institutions in this film have become with money.
- Again, I think it is vital that we have a shot of money similar to the shot in both films but one more symbolic and cinematic for a more deepen, meaningful effect, but not in the comedic way like has taken.
- As in Legend in this trailer we a gun being loaded and played with.
- This prop conveys their is going to elements, themes and scenes of violence in the film.
- However, in this film, the gun is symbolic of the power of the federal police bodies in America and illustrates explicitly through the prop of the gun their is crime taking place and with that follows involvement from the police.
- In terms of our film trailer, the prop of a gun will not be necessary as, even though they are in the same genre, our trailer does not fall down the route of gang violence and therefore no need for a gun.
Evaluation
- We need to include the prop of money and or ones that link to the mass amounts of money being made.
- Additionally, we could consider using props that link to Law enforcement but I'm confident that will fit in and conform to our narrative.
- Indefinitely, we will not be using the prop of a gun because our narrative is not one of violence or has involvement of Law enforcement agencies.
