Deconstruction of typography within trailers
By Connor Taylor
For a trailer, the main goal is to entice people to want to watch the real film, and one way to do that is to show some of the narrative, and one way to do that is through titles. However, titles need to conform the shots and the narrative, and one major aspect which can effect that is the typography, which is why I have decided to deconstruct some samples.
Limitless:
Limitless uses a very standard font, which can be found in many common titles in every day advertisement and titles. However, there are many aspects within this typography which make it unique. One is the glow and fade within the words, with parts being illuminated and others being faded, which then moves when playing making the typography an animated one. The colour of the typography is also very similar to that of the drug nzxt which the film is based around.
Pain & Gain:
Pain & Gain have used a very bold typography, with a very thick width and straight accents. This shows the typography to be very professional, then the scuffing and roughness has been added to the outer surrounding of the letters, making it look much more gritty and more of an action genre, and that there will most likely be a big turn within the film.
Skyfall:
Skyfall has used a bold and bright font in origin and has then greatly edited it, making the edges rough, gritty in the middle and an overall damaged effects. This therefore majorly conforms to the trailer of the protagonist going through many dirty environments, having to fight, run and generally make him and his attire look messy and unclean similar to the typography.
Spectre:
Spectre unlike the others uses quite a different style of typography, with the letters having a white black split, extremities on the edges and middle to make it appear to look more textured and as if it has a ridged surface. The overall impact of this typography make it appear to be slightly technology based and very pristine, as if it is a system that the protagonists faces, and with the bullet hole in glass also makes it look like a struggle which will end with death.
