Little Miss Sunshine - Films challenging taboo subjects
The grandpa dies from a drug overdose - this tackles the taboo subject of both death and drug abuse through means of comedy, as it is unexpected and unusual to see an elderly man, yet alone a grandparent, doing drugs.
Uncle Frank attempted suicide and is homosexual - both of these subjects are a taboo in society, although they are opening up. This may encourage those who are either suicidal or homosexual to relate and feel more of a belonging with their personal identity.
Little Miss Sunshine uses dark humour to lighten up the taboo topics.
Juno
Teenage pregnancy is a taboo subject which is used in a comedy yet again. The film makes teenage pregnancy seem fairly casual and perhaps easier to go through than it actually is. This may influence more teens to get pregnant as they believe it will be like in the film (hypodermic needle theory). There have been allegations that 17 teenage girls from a single Massachusetts high school fell pregnant due to this film.Hard Candy
Online predators and paedophiles are represented in this film. It uses a very alarming show of Jeff which may draw teens away from meeting people online and giving them a greater fear of paedophiles. In many recent years films have been beginning to show more and more taboo subjects, this conforms the the genre theory, that the genres evolve over time. These reflect a social and moral world at which these problems do exist, it makes it easy for everyone who has or has had these problems to relate to the film and find it more amusing/entertaining.
