To support the genre of Luther as a crime drama the opening credits use slow paced non-diegetic music which is depressing. This reinforces the genre as a crime drama and conforms to convention codes. The music is slow with high pitched piano with a woman singing in a depressing tone. We find the music is eerie creating enigma as the tone of the piano based soundtrack is spooky and unnerving adding to the sub genre of mystery and thriller essence through restricted narrative. This shows through audience theory that the music has an impact on the audience as they are being affected through the media.
Through the use of camera shots also show the genre as a crime drama as we see an overlooking shot of London. The reference to cities is a common convention of crime dramas as they are almost always set in urban locations. We also see this with an medium long shot of black figures of people in with famous London buildings in the background, such as Canary Wharf and the Gherkin. The black figures give restricted narrative as it is unrevealing, creating mystery, however we can relate to Propp's Spheres of action as the outline of the characters would suggest that the man is the main character, possibly a detective and the woman is his assistant.
Other uses of camera shots is the close ups of iconography which add to the crime drama genre. Examples of this would be the use of the finger print, the extreme close up of a person's eyes, a bullet hole and the hand print. These uses of mise-en-scene reinforces the genre as they are common conventions of a crime drama and relate to the genre, as well as show sub genres of action and thriller. Through hypodermic needle theory this can relate to the genre by influencing violence through convention codes, such as the bullet hole, impacting the audience to be more violent.
The editing of convention codes also adds to the sub-genre of a thriller as the close up shots of iconography are fast paced making it sudden to thrill the audience. This also links well to the uses of mise-en-scene through the use of filters as it links gives the illusion blood falling down the screen, linking to gore and crime reinforcing the crime drama genre. The gore can also be linked to the sub-genre thriller aspect. Restricted narrative can also be related to editing the sequence as
