Deconstruction of billings block
What is a billings block?
A billings block may look like a bar code but actually it is the detailed legal agreements and intense legal negation. In terms of where they are found, they are normally found at the bottom of film posters, near the end of film trailers and have to be included on the films website.
The font of the block is normally thin and sharp with the font being veyr small and the writing its self being very squeezed together. Here is an example of a Billings Block from the film Extremely Loud & Incredibly close
Why do film packages have billings blocks included?
Billings blocks are a legal requirement more than anything to make sure anyone who had a major part or helped fund or produce the film gets credit where it is due. If the Billings Block was not to be included then the people who believe they deserve some recognition for their role in making the film could become very upset and possibly even sue the main production team.
However, any way you look at it, a film poster or trailer doesn't look complete without a finely constructed billings block as they are now a common convention in all film genres and production of most media productions. As a result of this it is essential that throughout our film package our billings block is fault less and could pass for been one on a professional films poster having the right font, font size and spacing and placement of words and lines.
What is included in a billings block?
This is the billings block from the film Limitless that is apart of our genre.
- As we can, the font is very sharp and thin making the writing almost unreadable which is on purpose because the main focus is not the billings block but the poster and or trailer.
- Below the writing is all the emblems and names of the production companies and media outlets involved in the film along with the age rating and release date.
- The writing its self are names of people and their roles within the production of the film. For example one part says "RELATIVITY presents" which emphasises the film is produced and bought to the audience by the production company Relativity.
- Additionally, another example from Limitless is "Executive Producers Tucker Tooley Bradley Cooper Jason Felts" illustrating who is apart of the production team and had a senior role.
Conclusion
- Need to make sure the font, sizing and placement conform to who they are created in the film industry
- Have to included emblems of production companies
- The material itself has to list the production company, producers, director, main actors and othe main roles fulfilled in the making of the film.
