Deconstruction of Social Class

Deconstruction of Social Class:
Social class is the hierarchical view of society which are separated into different classes. For example, we have lower, middle and upper classes which show societies demographic through a socio-economic status. I deconstructed this in Limitless as an exemplar for our teaser trailer.

  • We see that trailers exploit the stereotypes of representing social classes which is evident in Limitless. The trailer begins with the character in a city and his appearance appears to be lower class through the use of iconography.
  • His apartment is untidy and small which conforms to the representation of working class suggesting that he has a low socio economic status. His old clothes and messy haircut also prove that he is lower class as his appearance looks impoverished.
  • His casual clothing as opposed to formal wear in the first half of the trailer indicates he in unemployed which is a common representation of the working class which supports the stereotype that working class are poor/unemployed.
  • In the second half of the trailer we see the transition of the character from a lower class background to an upper class background. We see this with the use of mise en scene to signify wealth. An example of this in the trailer is the large business corporations referenced through the use of skyscraper shots which conforms to the common media image that business symbolises wealth.
  • We also see the fast car and expensive villa conform to an upper class appearance as the convention codes symbolise wealth as the character has a high socio-economic status.
  • The character's change of clothes also symbolises the idea that he has a higher economic status as his appearance in a suit makes him look more formal, suggesting he is employed and wealthy which conforms to the common media image that upper class people have better paid jobs.
