Genre Investigation 'The Wolf of Wall Street'
By Connor Taylor
The Wolf of Wall Street:
Genre - Crime comedy
I then decided to next deconstruct The Wolf of Wall street, as this film is a major piece of inspiration and has greatly impacted the use of our shots to present our genre.
In these first two shots, their is the clear use of mise-en-scene to present the genre and its base narrative. With the main protagonist conversing in a skyline restaurant having breakfast in the middle of New York, a very expensive city. The diegetic speech also enables the audience to know about their drug abuse by (Matthew McConaughey) stating its what makes you sharp and keeps you going, suggesting also that it is a main aspect of business men work life.
They have also presented business crime in this trailer by the mise-en-scene, specifically they use of their suits. They have a faded charcoal grey and a pinstripe blue suit, both wearing paisley ties, which wear traditional and mandatory work wear in the 1990's america.
Then further through the trailer they start to show more shots of the protagonist taking drugs, drinking alcohol and 'partying' with women and prostitutes. Which then shows corruption from the masses of money the protagonist is getting and that it is now mandatory for abuse of these factors in business crime genres of films.
This trailer has therefore shown me that a major way that we can show and present crime drama and business crime in a trailer is too have some specific focus on the mise-en-scene as it can produce opinions and deeper thinking in the audience about what is a shot showing.
