Inspiration of cross-cutting used in 'The Gambler'

Deconstruction of cross-cutting used in 'The Gambler'

By Connor Taylor

During my research for inspiration a found this trailer which at the end had a very impressive piece of editing which was a cross-cutting black blur fade out in fast succession.

At the start of the cross cutting their is the diegetic speech which says 'What do you want to be able to say to me', suggesting an in depth thought process for the protagonist.

Then further within this cross cutting sequence their is the use of someone cocking a silenced pistol, suggesting that murder is intended for the protagonist or that he will be doing the murdering.

Then we see this scene further in the sequence of the main protagonist running down the street in what appears to be distress.

Then we have shots within a strip club, with women dancing provocatively in a low light club setting.

Then we have a shot of a man smoking, but the way in which the shot is held and the lighting used has made his face unrecognisable, suggesting a possible antagonist within the narrative.

Then as one of the last shots of the cross cutting is a low down fast moving shot of a camera going through a road, suggesting further aspects of the protagonist running from something, and from deduction of the last shots there may be possible hinting to the protagonist running from this life.

To conclude I thought that this sequence was very impressive and professional, it was very effective at presenting a possible further insight into the film which most audiences will only have taken some information away from, but still keeping a large portion of the narrative unknown.

Therefore from this trailer I will try to add a similar aspect, with a 'rapid' shot succession in order to create and build up in trailer.
