Deconstruction of Typography

Deconstruction of Typography

The Big Short

  • The typography used in The Big Short has serifs and is very fine and sharp throughout the trailer and along with the colour of white and gold it infers there's going to elements of greed within the film.

  •  The type of font resembles that of the US Dollar notes which is clever as it conforms to the genre in subtly gives some insight into the restrictive narrative.
  • In terms of the font being fine and sharp with serifs, it suggests the film could be presenting serious contextual material, as serifs normally have connotations of religion and horror, not finance and money.
  • But with the typography subverting the genre, it conveys that their is some sort of 'horror' or moral dilemma in terms of the financial world, creating enigma and restrictive narrative.

 The Wolf of Wall Street

  • Compared to The Big Short the typography is a lot different even though the films have similar narrative and are apart of the same genre.

  •  The typography in this film is thick, bold with no serifs or sharpness which implies the film should be seen in a lighter light than that of The Big Short.
  • This may be because the producers of the film believed that the title of the film its self infers enough to the audience and therefore the typography does not have to explicitly convey the films narrative.
  • Although, it can be argued that the typography was reflect and create enigma because the boldness of the typography and blatantness of the it could reflect films narrative and form and style that it has been filmed in.

 Legend

  • Compared to the two films above the typography very similar to that of The Wolf of Wall Street is a lot different even though the films have similar narrative and are apart of the same genre.

    • The typography in this film is thick, bold with no serifs or sharpness which implies the film should be seen in a lighter light than that of The Big Short.
    • However, unlike The Wolf of Wall Street this typography does have hints of some sharpness with the diagonal ends of the letters, which conveys the film will be a bit edgy and tense.

    Evaluation

    • The typography used by different films conforms and represents the genre of that film, normally.
    • For our genre, due to the variation in types of our genre the typography does differ depending on how the film has been filmed and whether or not its is in a serious sense or a lighter one.
    • For our trailer, we will probably find a comprise between The Big Short and Legend due to our narrative not being as serious as The Big Short but not more suited to the style and persona of Legend but definitely not the humorousness of the The Wolf of Wall Street.
