Editing: Website Design
The design our website for our film 'Bank' we used wix.com which is an online web deign page where you can design and create websites. For my role in the website creation process I was responsible for designing the footer of the webpage including legal documents and credits.
- Based on our research of official film websites we noticed that it is important to credit the production companies. In order to make our own website look professional we credited our production company Paramount Pictures. We added their logo to our website which we created on wix.com by saving an image to the desktop to be copied onto the website.
- Once we had saved the image to our selected file we chose the 'Add' button on the left hand pane and chose 'Image' and clicked 'My image uploads'. Once the selected image was downloaded onto the website format we could place it anywhere on the screen.
- Based on my research of official film websites the most appropriate place to put the logo was at the bottom of the screen as research shows that the credits from films are listed down in the footer of the website. As you can see from the screenshot above that the logo for Paramount Pictures is situated at the bottom left corner of the footer which was a common trend in a series of exemplar websites.
- In order to make the website's credits more professional I inserted a black background onto the footer by selecting the tool bar on the right hand side and then clicking on the design link where it opened up an option for footer design. The colour was changed to black as it merged with the background well, however there were limitations. The bottom of the footer shows a small gap at the bottom of the screen. As a result, this created problems and required further editing.
- In order to improve the footer we minimised the gap at the bottom of the webpage by using the menu on the right side to insert a shadow effect on the black footer. This proved to be a success and was easy to use as it was an effective solution to our problem as well as being easy to use. From the 'Footer Design' option we were able to alternate the degree and size of the shadow to our preference.
- From additional research we also based other credits on official film websites and use them as exemplars for our own website. The textbox along the bottom in the footer is a right up of the year of the film and extending write up credits to the production company. This was done by using the menu from the right hand side where we selected 'Text' to insert and edit our written credits. In order to make it as professional as possible we based our font size and font design on official film websites which worked effectively as the end result of the text box looked formal and was easy to use. The screenshot shows the font we used and the size selected which was easy to insert as the instructions were clear.
- Finally, the end credits to our footer was also based on research of official film websites. We found that there are additional hyperlinks for legal documents, such as 'Privacy Policy' and 'Terms of Use' for example. In order to recreate this we use Wix's 'Menu' option where we could select a themed menu to insert as a hyperlink. This was simple and effective because the end result of this looked formal and sophisticated. Once the menu was selected we could alter the size and text we used and placed it on the right hand side of the footer, based on inspiration from other sources.
- We inserted the text using the pages option from the menu on the left hand side of the screen. Once we completed the write up we pressed 'Add Page' where a text box of our menu would be collected. This was successful for making our website because it looked professional and the use of hyperlinks made the website look thoroughly detailed.
- Using the drop down menu 'Horizontal Menu Design' we were able to edit the text to make the hyperlinks look genuine and generic. This was effective because this menu was easy to use and was basic, yet the final hyperlinks looked official as we were able to edit the size of the font and the font design.
In hindsight, the only real limitation I came across when I was editing was inserting the correct footer as it took a while to place one at the correct format to look formal. However, in the end we found a solution to this problem and are pleased with the end result and my skills with Wix have progressed.
