Film Poster Reviews and Ratings Research

Film Poster Reviews and Ratings Research:

As part of our research to insert reviews and rating onto our film poster it is important that we deconstruct professional examples that relate to our genre of an urban crime drama to conform to our poster. We have used three examples to use as inspiration which conform to our poster genre so we know what is useful to use.

  • In the film poster 'Black Mass' we see ratings in the right third of the poster. There is a mixture of both star ratings and quote reviews to advertise the film. This has been used to highlight the prestige because we see four lots of bold four star symbols to emphasize the quality of the film, as well as the tagline statements to sell the film.
  • We can also see who has published these ratings which is important in assessing the reliability and demographic of the film. An example of this would be that there is a four star ratings from the Daily Mail, which identifies the target audience of the film.
  • The fonts which have been used in the reviews matches the typography of the main title. This helps the review conform to the genre of the film by linking the quote to the title, making the statement relatable to the product.

  •  In the film poster 'Legend' we see star ratings as opposed to multiple reviews which subverts the common media image of urban dramas. There is a total of twelve ratings in the film poster which exceeds the limit of a conventional urban drama poster. The publishers of the ratings have also been included as a credit which relates to the demographic of the target audience.
  • The typography used in the review matches the font used in the main title which conforms to common media images. The review also relates to a nostalgic British audience by interpreting the film as a "British Classic".
  • In the Skyfall poster we see that there is also a mixture of ratings and reviews from various publishers. The typography isn't linked with the main title as much as the main title has a worn away effect unlike the reviews, however the font is the same. The text is bold and in a large font as part of the golden rule to draw the audience's attention towards the prestigious reviews as advertisement.
  • The four/five star ratings convey the idea that the 'Skyfall' film is of great quality. The reviews also imply this through using the actor to interpret that the actor is of good quality "Nobody does it better than Daniel Craig".
